they felt like stock fantasy characters and nothing really sets them apart from each other or from any other basic fantasy protagonist. they spent the entire novel being pushed around by everybody, mostly being manipulated and betrayed. i thought the characters were cute in a way because they were pitiful and so easily manipulated, but it quickly became tedious. Like okay sure, the innocence and naivety were charming at first. i have never before read such pathetic and useless heroines in an adult fantasy novel until this.
